The Walk That Changed Everything
I was 14, walking to my neighbourhood masjid. A short 7 minute walk through a small park. Usually uneventful.
But that day, I found myself walking behind two kids who couldn't have been older than 8 or 9. They were in a heated argument. Back and forth, each one insisting the other was richer.
“No, you're rich, because you eat chicken kaleji”
Chicken kaleji is one of the most economical protein sources in South Asia. Back then, a kilo of chicken cost around 80 to 90 rupees, just over a dollar. Affordable for most. But still a luxury for many.
When I got home, I told my mother what I'd heard. And for the first time, I truly understood the privilege of choice.
That simple moment changed how I viewed food, class, and the meaning of gratitude. A good meal isn't just nutrition. For someone who rarely gets to choose what they eat, it's a celebration. A dawat.
Fifteen years later, that walk became Dawat in a Box, Shukar Hai's first offering.
A reminder that gratitude transforms both the giver and the receiver.
